Donald Trump announced he is launching a brand new hotel and vacation destination in California, and the brand name he is currently using for it, the Shangri-La Hotel and Resort, has changed drastically.
Trump will be selling the new Shangri, which is located on the site of the former U.S. Army barracks at the California resort of Davao, to the Trump Organization.
The new Shangryl is a 21-story, 18-story hotel and two luxury condos with a rooftop pool that is expected to open by early 2021, according to a press release from Trump Organization spokesperson Brian Earp.
Trump has not yet confirmed a grand opening date.
A new logo will be featured in the hotel’s main entrance, and a new name, ShangriLa, will be introduced in 2018, according the release.
The new name has not been announced.
The Shangri has long been a controversial name for the new hotel, which was originally named the Shangrilas Shangri Hotel.
The name was a combination of the Chinese characters for “land” and “mountain” and was used as a generic name for many of the resorts, hotels, and other property in the resort, according Reuters.
The brand name for this new hotel is called the Shangryla, according a press statement from the Trump brand.
The hotel will be called Shangri Las Vegas and the name will be used throughout the development, the press release said.
Trump’s decision to launch the new resort, which will be a major component of his global brand strategy, was announced at a press conference in California Thursday.
The hotel is expected open in 2021.
Earp told Reuters the hotel will include a pool, a meeting room, and “fancy suites” and that it will have “a variety of luxury amenities, including two outdoor terraces and a rooftop bar” as well as “shipping facilities, an elevator, a private dining room, a restaurant, spa, and more.”
Trump, a longtime investor in luxury and vacation properties, has built many of his own luxury hotels, including the Trump International Hotel and Tower in New York City and Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida.
The Trump brand has struggled to keep up with a surge in luxury hotel construction around the world, as well.
According to a 2016 study by Zillow, the number of new luxury hotels opened in the U.K. and the U to the US. each year increased more than 100% between 2012 and 2020.
