The newest installment in the beloved franchise is a massive success in the United States, with a whopping $1.9 billion gross worldwide.
But for some, the latest installment in George Lucas’ trilogy is just another piece in a larger puzzle.
The film’s popularity is tied to a phenomenon called the Star Wars obsession.
According to a recent study conducted by a company called The Cultivation, fans of Star Wars are obsessed with the saga’s most famous character, Princess Leia.
According to the study, fans have even gone so far as to refer to the new film as the “original trilogy” because of the influence the original trilogy has had on the series.
According the Cultivation survey, the most common reasons people cite for wanting to see the next film are: “The characters and plot are original, they’re strong, they have depth, and they have an emotional component” or “they have more of a social aspect to it.”
The study found that people are even more into the films themselves than they are the films’ iconic characters.
“A significant portion of respondents are more likely to say that they will watch the film on the big screen or in a movie theater than on TV,” according to the Cultivating study.
The popularity of Star War has also spurred the development of an online dating app called Tinder, which is meant to help people find a romantic partner through a virtual date.
According a recent blog post on the dating app, the app has more than 4.7 million users in its first two weeks.
“With over 60 million members, Tinder has over 4 billion matches and nearly 50 million people using the app each day,” Tinder wrote.
The success of the app is likely tied to Star Wars, but it’s not the only thing people are searching for online.
In addition to the Star War obsession, many people are looking for a romantic match for the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a movie that has been described as “a cinematic journey into the minds of the audience.”
According to The New York Times, fans are searching on the website SeekingArrangement for a potential romance.
“When you read the description of a prospective romantic interest, the first thing that pops up is ‘Indiana Jones,'” said one SeekingArranged match.
The film’s success has also led to more and more movies, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens, to be released on digital platforms, which are expected to grow in popularity in the coming years.
According the Cultivated study, the films grossed $3.9 million in the first three weeks of release, making them the second-highest grossing film ever in the world behind Titanic.
